Analyzing freedom from interference (FFI) for software on mixed integrity level platforms becomes increasingly difficult as the complexity of the platform increases. Conventional methods such as FMEA and FTA are difficult to apply effectively.
A novel method similar to the threat and risk analysis (TARA) used in cybersecurity was used to analyze freedom from interference.
Model-based safety testing of motor control software
Motor control applications always require high reliability and are frequently safety related. Thorough testing is therefore essential. However, testing of motor control software, particularly at the current control level where execution cycles are fast and timing is critical, presents challenges.
A testing method was designed that combined the use of executable mathematical models with a multiple-execution-cycle test harness to verify complete motor control loops to a level of integrity suitable for safety-related applications.
Functional safety enhancement to steering controller software
An industrial truck’s steering controller software was upgraded to meet the ISO 13849 safety standard. The team faced major constraints: no existing safety‑compliant process, tight deadlines, and a distributed team with limited experience in the safety-related domain. Starting from a stable baseline, they added a new safety channel while keeping the software continuously releasable. Clear requirements, precise notation, incremental integration, disciplined branching, and continuous testing helped maintain flow and avoid late defects . The team delivered compliant, high‑integrity software within a short timeframe.
Real-time display of internal motor control software variables
When “tuning” motor control software, it is useful to be able to visualize in real-time the values of the internal control variables.
A custom tool was developed to display on a PC in an oscilloscope-like format the current values of control software while it is executing.
